Big, Episode 1 Review

18-year-old Kang Kyung-Joon’s (Shin Won-Ho) spirit suddenly becomes transplanted into the body of 30 year old Seo Yoon Jae (Gong Yoo). Seo Yon-Jae is a successful doctor and engaged to high school teacher Gil Da-Ran (Lee Min-Jung). Gil Da-Ran happens to be the teacher of 18-year old Kang Gyung-Joon. Ma Ri (Bae Suzy) is a girl who loves Kang Kyung Joon (Shin Won Ho) and will try anything to free Kang Kyung Joon’s spirit from Seo Yoon Jae’s body.

Episode 1:
As I watched the first episode, I thought the plot would be along the lines of “ooh, a wedding of someone that the protagonist is involved with, or maybe her first love marries another girl and BOOM! A war will begin”, but I was so wrong.

In the first episode, the two protagonists meet while Gil Da Ran (GDR) is catching a bouquet and falls down a flight of stairs. She fractures her tail bone and wrist, and is hospitalised for 2 months. After the hospitalisation, Seo Yoon Jae (SYJ) proposes to her. Gil Da Ran is a short-term teacher in High School, but hasn’t earned her Teacher Certification yet, while Seo Yoon Jae is a Pediatrics doctor in a Seoul Hospital.

One day, GDR asks SYJ if he really loves her and becomes angry because she thinks that SYJ only wants to marry her because she is pitiful. KKJ grabs GDR’s cell phone off her and they go to the river. SYJ calls GDR and he asks where she is and says he‘ll meet her. However, there is an unfortunate accident that both KKJ and SYJ get into.

They take SYJ and KKJ to the hospital. Doctors think that SYJ is dead, so take him to the morgue, but a few minutes later he wakes up. SYJ sees GDR crying in the hall way (because she thought that SYJ was dead) and asks her who he is. She tells him that he’s SYJ, her fiancé, but he doesn’t believe it because he says that he is KKJ. They run tests on SYJ’s body but he is found to be healthy. SYG (KKJ) saw his Uncle and Aunt and overhears their conversation with the doctor. He sees his body lying in the hospital bed, with his Mother waiting beside. GDR is looking for SYJ but she can’t find him anywhere. GDR calls her co-teacher to ask her where KKJ lives and she found him there.

What do you think will happen in the next episode?

POV:
Big is not totally a unique drama. There are several other dramas that are this kind of genre (romantic fantasy). For example, Secret Garden, which is about two people who exchange bodies. I think it’s a good start that the writer first introduced the main characters in the story and they didn’t give it a cliff hanger ending. They also did a good job on introducing the plot, like at first, Gil Da Ran is a very energetic lady who’s studying very hard for her exam. Other good plot and character development is seen in Seo Yoon Jae, a good paediatrics doctor who makes excuses not to meet GDR, and of course Kang Kyung Joon, an 18 year old “matured” exchange student from America.
