Plaintive, elegiac and serenely beautiful, Seopyeonje centres on a young man’s quest to find the woman he loves. Both were once apprenticed to the itinerant pansori-singer Yubong, but she stayed (and suffered) while he rebelled and fled. Yubong is dead now, but Songhwa is rumoured to still be performing… Im’s greatest success at home and abroad, this is almost a Korean The Red Shoes.
