Japan Society Book Club – The Waiting Years (Fumiko Enchi)

Date: Monday 10th October 7.00pm
Venue: 5th View, Waterstone’s Piccadilly, 203-206 Piccadilly, London W1J 9LE
Fee: Free for Japan Society Members

Enchi’s debut in the western literary world is both enticing in its storyline as well as intriguing in its independent character portraits. Beyond all else it is Enchi’s depiction of the female characters in The Waiting Years which so captures the readers imagination. In the book, Tomo is a man whose lust and greed carries him from one mistress to the next as his wife is left in a more and more imposssible situation bound by an old fashioned code. Each of the central female characters in this novel are similar in that they have had a relationship with Tomo. However, it is their difference that Enchi draws upon to such great effect. Fumiko Enchi is one of Japan’s leading female novelists and was a member of the prestigious Art Academy

The book club is held on the second Monday of the month. There is no restriction on the nationality of the authors read, but books should be available in translation in both Japanese and English. The discussion is conducted mainly in English, but you can choose the language in which you read the book. The intention is simple: to explore the themes of the book, express personal opinions on the style and content, discuss how the book has changed (or not) in translation and to have a relaxed discussion with others who have similar interests.
