Mashiko Pottery Japan at Home London

Shoji Hamada, designated a ‘Living National Treasure’ in 1955 and one of the main founders of the ‘Mingei’ (Arts and Craft) movement, was the principle reviver of Mashiko-yaki (pottery). Although a traditional craft, Mashiko-yaki was developed through Hamada s expericenc of life in the UK, and interactions with groundbreaking craftsman of the era including Charles Eames, Bernard Leach and Eric Gill. The ideology behind the form was and remain to be, beauty in functionality. This exhibit will be a rare opportunity to see the work of Tomoo Hamada and experiece the continuation of the ideology through his work.
