Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture sets the mood for the evening with heart-stopping melodies and sweeping orchestral lines, the ‘love-theme’ being so memorable that it has been widely used in many TV shows and movies.

Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto is another piece of music that has captivated the minds of film-makers everywhere, being used for soundtracks in movies such as Brief Encounter and September Affair. This evening’s soloist is Hyung-ki Joo, a musician and pianist of rare class, gifted not only as a wonderful pianist but also as a comic genius in his Little Nightmare Music show which has received over 28 million hits on YouTube worldwide.

Just when all emotion seems to have been expressed, Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony ignites heroic feelings in an epic journey of true Russian story-telling beauty.
