Hauntingly scored by Kim Soo-Chul, Im’s epic drama exposes a dirty little secret in Korea’s modern history: the months in 1948-9 when communists set up local government in two southern towns and the state (abetted by the US army) used fascistic militias to crush them. Im’s account of this pre-echo of the Korean War shows both ideologies failing and sides with the long-suffering people.
