Movers and Shapers: Japan – UK Relations Seminar Series IV – Basil Hall Chamberlain

Date: 5 February 2009 from 6.30pm
Venue: The Japan Foundation, London

The fourth of our Movers and Shapers: Japan-UK relations seminar series looks at Basil Hall Chamberlain, one of the foremost Japanologists of the late 19th century. The only foreign professor at the time proficient enough in the language to be able to teach Japanese at Tokyo University, he was also first to translate the Kojiki into English, along with many other literary works. A keen traveller as well as writer and scholar, Chamberlain made an invaluable contribution to opening the world of Japanese literature and culture to foreign observers. Speaking at this seminar will be Professor Richard Bowring, Professor of Japanese Studies at Cambridge University. He has published numerous works in the fields of Japanese literature, religion and intellectual history, including an article on Basil Hall Chamberlain entitled “An amused guest in all”.
